Flagship City Initiatives
Our city prides itself on programmes and initiaves that uphold our five value pillars, of caring city, an opportunity city, a well-run city, an inclusive city and a safe city. Each year we ensure service delivery is directed to all those in need. We are particularly proud of the efforts made by departments on issues of social support, housing, energy food security and skills development and training.
Food security and community food gardens
Growing our own food in public or private gardens is a very good way for us all to take more responsibility for how and what we eat. It also helps us create better ‘food security’ – in other words, making sure all Capetonians have enough to eat.

Targeted work opportunities
Every year the City of Cape Town creates work for about 40 000 unemployed Capetonians via the EPWP. The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) was set up by National Government in 2004. EPWP offers short-term and medium-term work opportunities for those who are unemployed or under-skilled.
